Historically Haunted Houses

San Diego has restored and protects a few of the most paranormally active houses. Villa Montezuma is a Victorian mansion in Sherman Heights that was built in the late 19th century. It is said to be haunted by the ghost of Jesse Shepard, an English composer and spiritualist.

Shepard conducted séances to channel the dead in a room hidden behind a secret passage. People report still hearing music and even symphonies emanating from the now empty house.

Historically Haunted Houses

The William Heath Davis House is the oldest standing historic residence in the Gaslamp Quarter of Downtown San Diego. Built in 1850, people have reported seeing flickering lights inside the house for over a hundred years. Some would chalk that up to old wiring, however the house was never wired for electricity until the mid 1980's. Legend is that the house is haunted by the spirit of a young woman, who has made her presence known to visitors and staff.

Perhaps the most famous of all is the Whaley House. Ghost hunters have grown to know it as the most haunted house in America. This 19th-century Greek Revival-style home served as a general store, theater and San Diego's second court house.

The house of Thomas Whaley has a tragic history. It is believed to be haunted by the Whaley family who never left their family home, as well as those who died near the property. The Whaley House is in the heart of Old Town San Diego, which has a lot more dark secrets buried underneath the pavement.

The Graves Under Old Town San Diego

Old Town San Diego has a rich history dating back to the 1800s and early gold rush. It is undeniably haunted and its eerie past lingers beneath the surface. As San Diego began to grow, the streets and sidewalks of this charming historic district were constructed atop the unmarked graves of the El Campo Santo Cemetery.

Instead of relocating the remains with due respect, the bodies were left in the ground. Many headstones were merely moved, but most of them were destroyed. The desecration of the grave markers while leaving the bodies behind is a recipe for a palpable aura of unrest. This makes Old Town San Diego a true hotbed of paranormal activity.

A Neighborhood Built Over the Thousands of Graves

If the fact that San Diego’s Old Town was built over existing graves was a little unsettling, there is another place where the lost souls and unmarked graves are numbered in the thousands. Nestled in the quaint and rustic neighborhood of Mission Hills lies Pioneer Park. In the 1870’s this spot was known as Calvary Cemetery, a once-prominent pioneer cemetery.

A Neighborhood Built Over the Thousands of Graves

In the 1970’s over 800 memorial markers were removed. The headstones were ground up and used to pave Washington St. The remaining headstones were dumped in a canyon, only to be discovered during the San Diego Trolley expansion. All that remains are the ruins of the surrounding cemetery walls and a staggered row of tombstones along the park's edge. They are not even residing over the corresponding bodies. They remain standing only to serve as a memorial for the unidentified souls still interred beneath the ground.

While a plaque remains with the names of over 1800 bodies buried in the area, rumors persist that up to 4,000 souls may have been laid to rest here. Even as children play in the park, Mission Hills can still feel the presence of all the lost souls resting underneath them as a silent enigma.
